The Gap in Motivational Interviewing Certification

For years, professionals across healthcare, behavioral health, justice, and education have asked a simple question:

Is there a legitimate certification in Motivational Interviewing?

It is a fair question.

Motivational Interviewing is one of the most researched and widely taught evidence-based approaches in the world. It is used across disciplines to support behavior change, improve engagement, and strengthen outcomes.

And yet, unlike many other evidence-based practices, there has never been a universally accepted certification process.

That absence has not been due to a lack of interest or importance. It has been due to a commitment to integrity.

The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), the international organization most closely associated with MI, has examined this question for years. Their focus has been clear: if certification exists, it must reflect the true spirit and fidelity of Motivational Interviewing, not reduce it to a checklist or a credential that can be earned without demonstrated competence.

In that process, one truth has become widely accepted.

The closest thing to a gold standard in Motivational Interviewing is not attendance at a training. It is not familiarity with the concepts. It is not even self-assessment.

It is the ability to demonstrate skill.

Fidelity tools such as the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale and the Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment (MICA) have provided a research-based way to measure that skill. They allow practitioners to move beyond intention and into observable practice.

This is where the field currently stands.

Motivational Interviewing is widely taught. It is highly valued. It is deeply needed.

And there is still a gap between learning MI and demonstrating it with fidelity.

That gap is not theoretical.

It shows up every day in practice.
